Why you need to KonMari your chemicals

If you regularly ask yourself ‘does this spark joy?’ then you will know the KonMari method. We owe a debt of gratitude to Marie Kondo for helping us to effectively organise our home, but isn’t it time we KonMari our chemicals too? Yes, your cupboards may be alphabetised and colour-coded to within an inch of their lives, but what about the chemicals within them? Would spraying your child’s highchair with toxic chemicals spark joy for you? If not, it’s time to get rid.

Household chemicals are attributed to the rise in asthma, eczema and other common childhood conditions, many of which continue well into adulthood. These products contain endocrine disrupting chemicals that literally interrupt and stop the function of our bodies on a cellular level. I loved nothing more than a good bleaching session to make my house sparkling clean, but I would be coughing all the way through it. I would antibac my surfaces like there was no tomorrow, not stopping to think what carcinogenic chemicals were in the residue left behind.

We are the gatekeepers to our home. When we know better, we do better.

Check your cupboard contents. I can guarantee you that a large proportion of mainstream cleaning products will bear the labels ‘toxic, corrosive, keep out of reach of children, harmful if swallowed’ for their ingredients. Many of these ingredients are feature on the poisons list, and if ingested the person must seek medical advice immediately.

So having a pretty KonMari cleaning cabinet isn’t enough. You need to make sure that the contents are clean too. And don’t get me started on the greenwashing we are seeing across mainstream products. Companies are switching tack and promising you an eco-friendly, ‘all natural’ product for the most sensitive skin, in a bid to get your business. But a green label and clean advertising doesn’t mean a chemical free product.

A green label and clean advertising doesn’t mean a chemical free product.

Synthetic fragrance, or parfum, is one of the biggest irritants to our skin, lungs and indeed our whole body. Yet you will find it in the household detergents that promise to look after delicate newborn skin. Parabens and phthalates are known endocrine disruptors and carcinogens, yet they fill our cleaners, creams and cosmetics.

So what can we do about it? Ditch and switch. We have been transitioning our personal care products and cleaning products to clean, green brands to protect our home and preserve our health. Here are some of the switches we made:

Antibacterial Spray – Thieves Household Cleaner
Floor Cleaner – Thieves Household Cleaner
Bathroom Cleaner – Thieves Household Cleaner
Bleach – Thieves Household Cleaner
Hand Soap – Thieves Foaming Hand Soap
Shower Gel – SoapDaze soap on a rope
Hair Products – Giovanni EcoChic range
Deodorant – Salt of The Earth Deodorant
Toothpaste – Flouride Free EcoDenta Black Whitening Toothpaste
Makeup Remover – Solid Coconut Oil, Lavender, Frankincense and Purification Essential Oils
Moisturiser – Sukin Facial Moisturiser

There are still items we have yet to replace, but we have felt the physical and emotional benefits of making these changes already. Our skin is happier, our breathing is easier and our bodies are more rested. If you want to follow our journey you can do so over on Facebook and Instagram at @thelittleoillife. The hidden dangers in your home

There is nothing like the waft of a mulled wine scented candle at Christmas. As the self-confessed candle queen, my home was filled with powerful scents in every single room.

That was until I realised I was slowly and steadily poisoning my whole family.

Scented candles, air fresheners and fabric softener are the top three poisons in our homes. My husband and my kiddos never liked my candles, often complaining about the smell and claiming it was overpowering. I thought they were just over sensitive, but turns out it was their body’s way of telling them to get the heck away from the products.

I don’t know why I’m surprised at their toxicity. Have you ever┬ánoticed that you get a tickly cough, sneezes, itching eyes or headaches when in a candle shop or cosmetics shop? This is because of synthetic fragrances that interfere with our health and wellbeing.

We all love scents. We go out of our way to smell good and make our home smell good. But very often the things we use to make a pleasant smell is a synthetic chemical blend known as fragrance or parfum. Many of these blends contain hundreds of chemicals.

Synthetic fragrances are hormone disrupters which means they hamper our body processes on a cellular level. In a nutshell, perfumes are making people ill. They contain phthalates which have been linked to asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, migraines, obesity, autism, ADHD, cancer and infertility.

Synthetic fragrances are found in air fresheners, candles, cosmetics, laundry detergent, perfumes and more. Because some are worn or soaked into fabrics, the individual acts like a walking diffuser, polluting the air of everyone around them. What is worse, during the winter we close our doors and windows to reduce ventilation, crank up the heating to dry our scent filled clothes, then light all the scented candles. Basically cocooning ourselves in a synthetic smog every evening.

But what about the natural fragrances products? Those infused with essential oils?

Well first off, well done for reading the packaging and seeking out more natural alternatives. But please know this: a label stating pure essential oil need only contain 5% pure oil in order to gain that title. It can also contain solvents, alcohol and fillers. This is why I only trust Young Living Essential Oils because they offer the unique Seed to Seal guarantee on all there products.

Now we know the risks we are not willing to put our health in jeopardy. We have now replaced our air fresheners and scented candles with child friendly diffusers in every room and we only use Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. We use Young Living essential oils to support our immune health, our emotional health and our physical health.

Since ditching the fabric softener and scented candles our chests are clearer, we haven’t had the annual trip to A&E with croup, we rarely have colds, our skin has improved and my cycles are more regular. It is incredible how the removal of a few chemical filled products has transformed our family life. We have more energy and are far healthier.

Instead of synthetic scents, we now diffuse authentic, 100% natural essential oils that fill our home with fragrance that calms, strengthens, invigorates, energises or motivates us.
