What brings joy?

For me, joy is found in good books, good coffee, good company, my good God and the great outdoors. So when restrictions limited contact with people, entrance to church and travel over the borders, like so many others, it hit me hard.

As a result, we have all had to get creative in finding joy in our new normal, and I began to redefine the bare bones of what I (and maybe we) really needed to feel joy.

Merriam-Webster defines joy as; ‘the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires’, ‘Delight – the expression or exhibition of such emotion, Gaiety.’

Note that top definition – emotions evoked by well-being. I don’t think I realised quite how essential being with people, being in Church and being outdoors was to my wellbeing – physically, emotionally and spiritually.

As an aromatherapist and wellness coach one thing I have always been proactive on is supporting my families wellness naturally. As so many things were removed from my control, this is one area where I did have control.

I could control what we listened to, what we watched, what entered our minds. Because what you see and hear on a daily basis affects your thought patterns, affects your emotional response, and affects your immune response. Increased stress hormone = lowered immune system, and at a time like this, that is one system you want running on all cylinders.

I could control what goes into and onto our bodies. By reducing exposure to toxins, (parfum, parabens, preservatives and the like) in food, soaps, detergents, cleaners and cosmetics, I can reduce stress on our immune system. This allows our bodies to heal, repair, restore on a cellular level, rather than fighitng micro battles on a daily basis.

Why is all this important to experiencing joy? Because when we feel well, we feel able to enjoy life more.

It’s hard to be joyful with an irritable bowel. It is hard to be happy with a throbbing head. It is hard to keep smiling with insomnia. When we aren’t well, we don’t want to be out or be with others, and this further depresses our mood and lowers our immune system.

Do I have all the answers for health and wellbeing? No, only Jesus does. But I do have an arsenal of natural remedies and years of experience that give us a good starting point.

If you are at a place where you want to explore how wellbeing supports your experience of joy the drop me a message.

Travelling during Covid-19

We are just back from a week away in Devon – something we weren’t sure would even happen in the wake of Coronavirus. Although we certainly saw and felt the affects of Covid-19 safety measures, I am pleased to say that we thoroughly enjoyed out time away. Here are our top tips to help keep you and your family safe this summer.

Talk about risks

I have always believed in talking to our children and explaining the risks. You don’t need to go into major detail about Covid-19 symptoms, but it is important to explain why we need to wash hands and stay away from others, especially indoors. Giving children the facts, and some tools such as their own masks and hand sanitiser, can help them feel a little bit more in control and take away the fear of Coronavirus. It is near impossible to expect children to social distance from one another (especially in playgrounds) so also talk about that, and if this makes you or your family anxious, steer clear.

Take it slow

When Covid first hit, I was very fearful and felt extremely anxious when outside the home, leaving my mental health fragile. I feel much more comfortable now, as I have had time to acclimatise, but the chances are our children haven’t. Don’t underestimate the fear and anxiety they may have from conversations they have heard or news programmes they have watched. Talk about how they may be feeling and give them time to acclimatise to being out in the big wide world again. Observe them while you are out and about and be sure to give them opportunity to say if they feel overwhelmed (without being a helicopter parent!).

Travel happy

We wouldn’t travel anywhere without the Fab Five: Thieves, Digize, Peppermint, Purification and Lavender essential oils. We use Thieves daily for immune support in a roller bottle swiped along our feet/spines, and increase our use while travelling and eating alfresco. Our children occasionally suffer with motion sickness so we support their tummies with DiGize on their abdomens and peppermint on their wrists. Finally, we have an outdoor spray made with Peppermint and Purification to keep our legs and arms bite free and Lavender for any owies.

Avoid the masses

This almost goes without saying, but arcades, amusements, restaurants, ice cream and souvenir shops are hot spots for people. If you or your loved ones are already anxious, then being in these places may make you feel very uncomfortable. It is worth researching less touristy beaches and heading off the beaten track to find little hidden gems away from the masses. Save your pennies by packing picnics and buying boxes of ice lollies from the supermarket. Finally, why not get the kiddos to send a video postcard to relatives via WhatsApp and create magnets from uploaded holiday snaps instead of hitting the High Street.

Make it memorable

Face masks will be mandatory in shops across the UK from the 24th July, so why not invest in some cute designs to make masks more fun? Children under 11 are exempt, however don’t discount them wearing one as it may help them feel a bit more protected while out and about. You can also pop a drop of your fave essential oil to help make mask-wearing more bearable. Valor is great for those who feel very anxious or Thieves for immune support on the go.

Happy holidays!

Get your feet on the ground

There is nothing better than bare feet on the grass or toes in the sand. Ever wondered why that is? It is because when we are connected to the ground, our energy connects with the Earth’s energy. The concept is that when we walk on the ground we have access to the Earth’s supply of free electrons which can help neutralize harmful free radicals in our bodies.

Energy is so frequently categorised as ‘new age’, but it needs to be claimed back by Christians. We know that the Earth has a magnetic field, we know that there is a positive and negative charge or energy. Everything in this world was made by God, and everything vibrates at a specific ‘frequency’. Every living thing, every plant, every person, even rocks have a vibration or frequency. But let’s remember that God made the earth, and the rocks, and the plants and US. Everything has energy because He put it there.

Everything in life is vibration – Albert Einstein

When we live in built up areas, surrounded by concrete not coastlines, surrounded by pavements and not parks, it is easy to understand how our energy can become ‘off’. Vibration or frequency is measured in MHz, and when the human body dips below 72MHz, we are more vulnerable to illness.

Normal Brain Frequency 72 MHz
Human Body 62–78 MHz
Colds and the Flu start at 57–60 MHz
Disease starts at 58 MHz
Candida overgrowth starts at 55 MHz
Receptive to Cancer at 42 MHz
Death begins at 25 MHz

Eating fruit and vegetables – living things with frequency – can raise our frequency. That is why those with diets high in fresh foods are typically healthier that those who consume processed food. Fresh food, drink, herbs and essential oils are full of living energy that is transferred to us and energises us, whereas pollutants and processed food can actually decrease our frequency and make us feel sluggish.

Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing – Ezekiel 47:12

I have learned that it is hard to dream big and live well when you don’t feel well. Environment has a massive part to play in our wellbeing, and where we live can often determine how we live. If we have access to open space, green parks, beautiful landscapes that shout of God’s glorious creation, we often feel much more relaxed and able to breathe. My biggest dreams and most impactful moments with God have so often come when I have been wandering through the woods, swimming in the ocean or staring across the valley from a mountain top. I feel well when I am in nature, and it is no surprise when you consider that God created us to be in nature, not in concrete blocks.

God created us to be in nature, not in concrete blocks

During our wellness journey we have learned that using essential oils can raise our frequency, while we simultaneously reduce and remove pollutants, toxins and processed food that can affect our frequency. As we have done more and more research on holistic wellness, we have found that walking barefoot on the ground is one of the easiest (and free!) ways to balance your body and reconnect with the Earth that God made. This practice is known as grounding or earthing. Just 15-20 minutes a day of being barefoot in your garden can make a huge difference to your energy levels, your sleep and your bodies God-given ability to heal itself. Go check out Grounded on Netflix or The Earthing Movie to find out more.

New Year Naturally

We all know the dangers of pollution in our air, but do we pay much attention to pollution in our homes? This month we are taking a look at every day products that contain known toxins and how we can swap them to a toxin free alternative.

One of the biggest toxins within the home is fragrance. We love to smell good, we love our clothes to smell good and we want our homes to smell good. But the price we pay for our synthetic scents can be devastatingly high. Studies have shown that synthetic fragrance and other chemicals in perfumes and beauty products are linked to infertility as well as foetal development, asthma, eczema and more. It is perhaps no coincidence that the rate of increased miscarriage and difficulty conceiving is directly proportionate to the rise of the use of phthalates, parabens and other preservative in our products since the 1950s.

Since 2017, we have been on a journey to create a non-toxic home for our family and friends. One of the first things we got rid of was scented candles, and the difference this made to our children’s respiratory health was huge! We replaced our candles with essential oil diffusers, and for the first time in 8 years. that winter we didn’t have a trip to A&E to have nebulisers and steroids administered to our boys. We then removed fabric conditioner from our laundry routine and replaced it with essential oils on wool dryer balls or in our ironing water to naturally fragrance our clothes.

We began flipping over the bottles of products under our kitchen sink, in our bathroom cabinet and my make up drawer. So many of them contained SLS, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, parfum etc, and were literally poisoning us from the inside out. These toxins are endocrine disruptors that threaten to cause chaos in our bodies, disrupting and disabling our hormones. Our hormones are chemical messengers that tell our cells what to do, so when disrupted, our cells can’t get the right messages.

Discovering the hidden dangers lurking in your home can be a daunting prospect, but I am a firm believer in the saying, ‘When you know better, do better.’ Month by month, we began replacing our toxin filled perfumes, fabric softeners, air fresheners, moisturisers and make up with clean, green products. As we have gone further into our toxin-free journey, we have then begun to look at the packaging of our products and how this is affecting our planet. It has become important to us that looking good and feeling good should not be at the earth’s expense, so we are trying to replace plastic in our homes, create less waste and be more mindful about where are products come from and where they end up when we are finished with them.

If you want to know more about replacing shop bought, preservative filled products with clean, green, natural options, click here or drop me a message today.

Fall in love with fragrance

It is the first of October and I am officially drinking nothing but Pumpkin Spiced Lattes until January 2020. Anyone else? I am also equally obsessed with having my home smell like fall, but this year without the toxic chemicals.

During Autumn/Winter the air quality in our homes plummet as we close the windows, crank up the heating and crack open the scented candles. Yes even your favourite mulled wine ones.

Why? Because candles, reed diffusers, plug ins and aerosol air fresheners release synthetic fragrances and petrochemicals into the air. Because we are ventilating our homes less in the colder months, these chemicals fill our homes, fill our lungs, penetrate our fabrics and are absorbed into our blood stream. They enter ever fibre of our being, often affecting children, the elderly and animals the most.

Chemicals cause chaos in our bodies, sending our skin, our respiratory system, and our hormones into a tail spin as our body deals with the toxicity. And all for the sake of a sweet fragrance in the hallway.

When we know better, we do better, and I want to share with you how you can freshen your home effectively with nature.

Since 2017 we have been ditching and switching everything from cosmetics to cleaning supplies, and we have never felt better. We replaced my much-loved scented candles with a diffuser also replaced our bleach and surface sprays with plant based products.

We control what comes into our homes and onto our bodies, and onto our loved ones. If you want to know more about going chemical free please message me I would love to help you ditch the junk for good.

Too good not to share

Ever been in love? If so you know what it feels like to be head over heels, completely consumed by someone or something. This is how I feel about essential oils. Sound extreme? Think again.

If you knew that you had a way to help a friend feel good, help her baby sleep, or support her skin, you would share it right? I mean, we don’t think twice about texting a pal to say that the Zara sale is EPIC, so why would you hesitate if you could share more than just great wardrobe suggestions?

I am passionate about sharing how we can live happier, healthier lives. Essential oils were key in my recovery from maternal mental health. They helped me feel positive, confident and courageous (find out more about essential oils and emotions here). Their impact on me was so huge that I couldn’t not share. Medication didn’t work for me this time around, but I found a natural alternative that supported my emotions and my mental health so well.

Since that first huff in the summer of 2017, I was hooked and have been on an oily journey ever since. The phrase ‘once you know better, do better’ rung true on a whole new level for me as I explored how and why we use essential oils. As a family, we are now well on the way to eliminating as many chemicals as possible from our home, filling our air with life-giving plant oils not putrid perfume and petrochemicals.

Our kids don’t cough like they used to. My skin doesn’t itch like it used to. We don’t get sick like we used to. Coincidence? I think not.

Since we ditched the chemicals and switched to plant based, natural products we have been the healthiest we have ever been. Coughs and colds have been few and far between, illnesses rare and rapidly recovered from. Teething smoother, tantrums shorter (mostly!), periods easier. You name it, every system in our body has benefited. And you can too.

I am on a mission to empower YOU to make a difference in your family health. You are the gatekeeper to your home. You control what comes in through your doors and goes on to and in to your body. Start turning over the products in your bathroom cabinets and kitchen cupboards. Read the ingredients on the labels in the brightly coloured sprays that you use on your babies highchair and on your body. Many of these products contain known carcinogens, known toxins that pollute your atmosphere and damage your organs. When you know better, you do better, and I would love to help you on your journey to a healthier, happier you.

Why Oils Are A Mom Essential

Motherhood is especially hard when your babies aren’t well. My girl has chicken pox, which is no surprise as she has been so exposed to it through many of our close friends. What has surprised me is how hard it has hit her, and my usually tenacious toddler is now feverish and fretful.

Fortunately this isn’t our first rodeo, and having had two boys who suffered with terrible cases of chicken pox, this mama is armed and ready. Last time round, I relied on over the counter drugs and oat filled socks in the bath, however this time I have extra help thanks to my natural wellness kit.

So far I have used 10 of the 12 essential oil in my tool kit. The main contenders are Lavender, Copaiba and Frankincense in the bath and also in coconut oil as a lotion to soothe her skin and calm her mind. Next up Thieves, Purification and Peppermint diffused in her room to help support her immune response and keep her cool. Because she feels warm we are also using Digize to help her tummy feel happy. Mama is slathering on Stress Away and Orange as I cannot bear seeing my babies suffering. That only leaves Lemon (which will be in my G&T later) and R.C. which I usually use for respiratory support! So to say that my oils are well used is an understatement!

Hopefully we will turn a corner tomorrow and start to see the spots drying up, but for now I will be powered by Jesus, coffee and essential oils! Prayers appreciated! In the meantime if you want the down low on how to get this wellness kit into your home, message me or comment below!

Why you need to KonMari your chemicals

If you regularly ask yourself ‘does this spark joy?’ then you will know the KonMari method. We owe a debt of gratitude to Marie Kondo for helping us to effectively organise our home, but isn’t it time we KonMari our chemicals too? Yes, your cupboards may be alphabetised and colour-coded to within an inch of their lives, but what about the chemicals within them? Would spraying your child’s highchair with toxic chemicals spark joy for you? If not, it’s time to get rid.

Household chemicals are attributed to the rise in asthma, eczema and other common childhood conditions, many of which continue well into adulthood. These products contain endocrine disrupting chemicals that literally interrupt and stop the function of our bodies on a cellular level. I loved nothing more than a good bleaching session to make my house sparkling clean, but I would be coughing all the way through it. I would antibac my surfaces like there was no tomorrow, not stopping to think what carcinogenic chemicals were in the residue left behind.

We are the gatekeepers to our home. When we know better, we do better.

Check your cupboard contents. I can guarantee you that a large proportion of mainstream cleaning products will bear the labels ‘toxic, corrosive, keep out of reach of children, harmful if swallowed’ for their ingredients. Many of these ingredients are feature on the poisons list, and if ingested the person must seek medical advice immediately.

So having a pretty KonMari cleaning cabinet isn’t enough. You need to make sure that the contents are clean too. And don’t get me started on the greenwashing we are seeing across mainstream products. Companies are switching tack and promising you an eco-friendly, ‘all natural’ product for the most sensitive skin, in a bid to get your business. But a green label and clean advertising doesn’t mean a chemical free product.

A green label and clean advertising doesn’t mean a chemical free product.

Synthetic fragrance, or parfum, is one of the biggest irritants to our skin, lungs and indeed our whole body. Yet you will find it in the household detergents that promise to look after delicate newborn skin. Parabens and phthalates are known endocrine disruptors and carcinogens, yet they fill our cleaners, creams and cosmetics.

So what can we do about it? Ditch and switch. We have been transitioning our personal care products and cleaning products to clean, green brands to protect our home and preserve our health. Here are some of the switches we made:

Antibacterial Spray – Thieves Household Cleaner
Floor Cleaner – Thieves Household Cleaner
Bathroom Cleaner – Thieves Household Cleaner
Bleach – Thieves Household Cleaner
Hand Soap – Thieves Foaming Hand Soap
Shower Gel – SoapDaze soap on a rope
Hair Products – Giovanni EcoChic range
Deodorant – Salt of The Earth Deodorant
Toothpaste – Flouride Free EcoDenta Black Whitening Toothpaste
Makeup Remover – Solid Coconut Oil, Lavender, Frankincense and Purification Essential Oils
Moisturiser – Sukin Facial Moisturiser

There are still items we have yet to replace, but we have felt the physical and emotional benefits of making these changes already. Our skin is happier, our breathing is easier and our bodies are more rested. If you want to follow our journey you can do so over on Facebook and Instagram at @thelittleoillife. I am a Young Living distributor, so if you decide to create a free Young Living account and try some of our chemical-free products for yourself, please click this link to buy through me and bless my family.

Seasonal Support

Spring is in the air, which means so too is the pollen! Tree blossom can cause havoc this time of year, so if you are someone who is typically affected then read on.

Essential oils can offer incredible support to those who suffer with seasonal symptoms. Why? Because they support our bodies at a cellular level. There are many single oils and oil blends that support the respiratory system and the immune system, two systems which are so often aggravated by seasonal changes. Although essential oils cannot cure, they can massively support the symptoms you experience.

You can enjoy the benefits of essential oils by inhaling them (aromatherapy) or applying them with carrier oil (topically) or ingesting them (internally)*. Just one drop of essential oil contains 400 million trillion molecules. These molecules are so tiny and so powerful that once inhaled or absorbed, they will cover every single cell in your body within 20 minutes. They can even cross the blood/brain barrier into the thinking/feeling part of your brain known as the limbic system. This is why essential oils are so effective in supporting our emotions and mental well being.

So which essential oils support seasonal changes?

Lavender

This essential oil is soothing and calming to the respiratory tract and also the skin. Apply topically with carrier oil to the chest or neck to ease any seasonal discomfort.

Lemon

Lemon is detoxifying, cleansing and supports lymphatic drainage. This oil is also highly mood boosting. Diffuse with Peppermint for the ultimate morning pick me up combo.

Peppermint

The menthol in this oil is incredibly powerful for awakening the senses and opening the airways. One drop on the back of the neck supports breathing and head discomfort. You can also use Peppermint+ in your water for a refreshing drink that soothes and supports.

R.C.

Also known as Respiratory Care, this blend of three eucalyptus plants and lavender is a must to support breathing. Diffuse at night to support a restful sleep or mix with coconut oil to make a chest/foot rub.

Purification

Dust and spores can cause problems for allergy sufferers, so use Purification to cleanse the air in your home. This blend contains rosemary, tea tree, citronella, lemongrass, lavandin and myrtle. Diffuse throughout the season alone or with lemon for a fresh, clean fragrance in your home.

There are many more, but these are the key essential oils we recommend. I take my seasonal roller bottle with me everywhere this time of the year so I can get all the oily goodness on the go!

How to cope this Christmas

So the Big Day is just weeks away, but it is not an exciting time for all. Christmas can actually be an incredible stressful and anxious time for many people. Perhaps you feel completely overwhelmed with juggling overexcited kids, Christmas shopping, organising nativity costumes and all the things. Perhaps you were made redundant and this year you simply cannot afford a Christmas like the year before. Perhaps this is the first Christmas since a loved one died or your marriage separated. Perhaps this season marks the anniversary of a child in your care being removed from their family.

There are a whole host of reasons why we can feel anxious and overwhelmed during the festive season, and our emotions are incredibly powerful. So much so, that they actually affect our physical wellbeing. What we say and what we think can be as damaging as a physical injury, and by continuing to brush our feelings under the carpet we are causing more harm than good. If Christmas is a time that you dread, fear or avoid altogether, then maybe it is time to explore why that is with a therapist. In the meantime I would love to share a few tips on how we use essential oils to support emotions over the festive period.

What are essential oils?

Essential Oils can support our emotional health as they effect our emotional state. They can help us to feel more balanced and calm, and their use is referred to as ‘aromatherapy’.

Essential oils are the lifeblood of the plant, compounds which work to repair, restore and regulate the plant, and they can massively benefit us too. Essential oils are ‘volatile’ which means they quickly evaporate and are easy to inhale them either from a bottle, on fabric or on the skin. When inhaled, these minute essential oils molecule travel past our olfactory system, cross the blood/brain barrier (something very few medicines can do) and enter the limbic system of the brain. This is the area of the brain that controls our emotional response.

How do they work?

Smells are so important when it comes to considering emotional health. Our brain uses smells within our memory bank, and certain smells will trigger a response and take you right back to the memory of a time or place in your past. These can be both positive and negative.

Emotions are stored in our cells, and because essential oils are so tiny, they can enter our cells and help us process emotions on a cellular level. There are approximately 40 million trillion molecules in one drop of essential oil, which is approximately 40,000 molecules for each cell in the human body. So a little goes a long way!

Here are my top five essential oils for emotional support this season:

Valor

This is my go to oil when I feeling anxious or overwhelmed. This is a blend of Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, Camphor Wood, Geranium, and Frankincense and smells quite woodsy. I mainly use it topically to help with feelings of strength, courage and security, particularly if I am facing a tough day. It is also great if you are feeling alone or abandoned.

Stress Away

This exotic blend was created to combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life. Stress Away contains Lime, Copaiba, Lavender and Cedarwood and Ocotea essential oils and vanilla essence. We roll this blend on every day before school to uplift our mood and calm the mind, especially before a busy day or school tests. It also helps calm small people in new environments, or those who may be struggling with being away from home.

Bergamot

This is a sweet citrus scent that lifts the mood and helps with feelings of confidence. Bergamot is also widely known to help support those who are grieving or processing loss. I would diffuse this oil with Stress Away or apply topically to my skin with carrier oil.

Orange

We call this sunshine in a bottle and it is one of my all time favourite oils because, like other citrus oils, it is so uplifting.  I pair Orange oil with Joy or Valor for a gorgeous perfume that I can roll on throughout the day.  It is perfect for use on grey days, when you are feeling a bit down or sad, and it also supports your immune system too!

Frankincense

Thank Frank. Not only is this oil already famous because of baby Jesus, it is also incredibly grounding. It is a high frequency oil which supports your whole body physically, emotionally and spiritually. If you are looking for an oil to aid prayer and meditation or something to help the kiddos calm down in the chaos of Christmas, diffuse this with Lavender and Orange.
